Headaches have countless potential causes, but research indicates that, in many instances, headaches are associated with the spinal bones of the neck, also known as the cervical vertebrae. Because of the extreme mobility of the neck, it’s common for one or more of these bones to become displaced. When this occurs, the cervical nerves often become compressed and irritated, resulting in headaches.
Types of Headaches:
More people suffer from tension headaches than any other type of headache. Caused by muscle strain or contraction, they cause pain in the forehead or the back of the head and neck. Most patients describe the pain of a tension headache as a dull ache. They usually come on gradually and may subside in as little as a few hours or they may last several weeks.
Migraines occur in many forms. Most migraine sufferers experience severe pain which occurs as the result of blood vessels dilating and pressing on sensitive nerve endings in the head. Classic migraines are often preceded by what is known as an “aura or unusual visual and physical sensations. Migraine sufferers may also experience nausea, vomiting and exhaustion following a migraine episode.
Like migraines, cluster headaches occur as the result of blood vessels dilating in the head. The term “cluster” refers to how these headaches occur in clustered episode. Patients with these types of headaches experience several headaches over the course of a week or two then don’t have another episode for an extended period of time. They usually last 30 minutes or less and recur in painful, violent bursts.
You may think that over-the-counter pain relievers are a sufficient solution to your headaches, but they merely mask pain rather than addressing the underlying cause. If you suffer from chronic or frequent headaches, it’s important to seek treatment right away.
